The 7th grade Solorsano boys basketball team just completed a
magical season with a 48-47 win over Chaboya Middle School, to
capture the East Santa Clara County basketball championship.
The 7th grade Solorsano boys basketball team just completed a magical season with a 48-47 win over Chaboya Middle School, to capture the East Santa Clara County basketball championship.
The team was the first in school history to qualify for the boys hoops playoffs. The Eagles finished an impressive 12-0.
Solorsano soared through the regular season 9-0 with an average winning margin of 29.2 points per game.
A tough game throughout, the Eagles had a balanced scoring attack versus the Colts in the championship contest. Center Dillon Day led the way with 14 points, followed by Josh Wheat with 12, Tracy Cox with eight,Chad Hartman had seven and Alec Cordova contributed six points.
The playoffs began with a home game versus Russell Middle School of Milpitas. The local team ran out to a quick 15-point lead at the half. After a second half run by Russell, the Eagles were able to close out the game, winning 39-36. Hartman led the team with 14 points.
In the semifinals, Solorsano faced off against Quimby Oaks Middle School. The game featured 14 lead changes and was tight throughout. In the closing minute of the game, Hartman sank six straight free throws to seal the victory. Raul Tovar played extremely aggressive defense on Quimby’s best shooter in the second half.
“Chad came up huge with those free throws, but Raul’s defense saved the game” head coach Al Orosco said.
The team was led by returning starters Day, Hartman, Cox, and Wheat. Other guards included, Jonny Olvera, Cordova, Tovar, and Michael Sosa. Fowards included, Colton Hill, Michael Porras, Daniel Ordaz and Darius Alexander-Jones. Coach Orosco was assisted all season by coaches Tracy Cox, Zack and Ryan Orosco.
“Thanks to my assistants and a great group of parents that helped me all season,” Orosco said. “Im very proud of the way the boys played all year. I look forward to continuing this success next year in 8th grade.
The team will be honored by Gilroy City Council on March 15th at 7 pm. at City Hall.
