The San Jose man accused of repeatedly molesting a female juvenile in Morgan Hill was in court for a plea hearing, which was postponed Tuesday.
Wallace Carmalt, 47, was arrested by Morgan Hill police July 20 at his home on Foxchase Drive.
The arrest was based largely on statements from the victim, a Morgan Hill teen who is now 19 years old. The victim first contacted the police to report the abuse July 10.
Carmalt is charged with five felony counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child younger than 14. If convicted of all five counts, he faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison.
Police said he sexually abused the victim multiple times when the two were living together in Morgan Hill, while the victim was between 8 and 13 years old.
Carmalt was a friend of the victim’s family while the alleged abuse happened, police said.
He remains in custody in Santa Clara County jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
His plea hearing is now scheduled for Sept. 7 at South County Courthouse. He is represented by the county public defender’s office.
