Prep Roundup: Jan. 5

Gilroy matched Branham point for point in the second and third quarters Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to come away with a win. 
The Mustangs fell 52-40 at Braham Saturday in their last contest before league play begins. 
Gilroy found itself in an early hole as it was outscored 17-8 in the first quarter. Both teams posted 13 points in the second and 11 in the third, but the host again outscored the Mustangs 11-8 in the final frame for the final.
Michael Kropff led Gilroy with 21 points. Kevin Azcueta chipped in with eight points and Connor Doyle added six as he nailed two 3-point baskets. 
Gilroy (2-10) will host North Monterey County at 7 p.m. Wednesday to open Monterey Bay League-Pacific Division play. 
GIRLS BASKETBALL 
Mustangs fall to Carmel
Gilroy dropped its second straight contest, falling 48-21 to Carmel at home Saturday. 
Stats from this game were not yet available. 
The Mustangs only trailed by two points, 8-6, at the end of the first before Carmel broke the game open. The Padres outscored Gilroy 18-6 in the second to take a 26-12 lead at the half.
Carmel held the Mustangs to only nine points in the second half while scoring 22 of its own. 
Gilroy (6-5) will open Monterey Bay League-Gabilan Division play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Salinas. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Cougars fall to Saints
Santa Teresa built a lead too big for Christopher to overcome in the first half of Saturday’s contest. 
The Saints scored three goals in the first and added another in the second for good measure to top the Cougars 4-0 at Christopher High. 
Stats for the Cougars were not yet available.
Christopher (2-4) will open Monterey Bay League-Gabilan Division play at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Salinas.
