Christopher swimming ended the regular season in stellar fashion as it swept Everett Alvarez at home Friday.Â
The girls blew past the Eagles with a 112-62 victory, while the boys edged them out 75-72.Â
Maria Higgenbotham and Max Deliz led the charge for the girls and boys teams, respectively as each recorded four wins at the meet.Â
Higgenbotham was 22 seconds faster than the second place finisher in the girls 200-meter freestyle for her first individual ‘W’ of the day. She bested her Alvarez counterpart by 39 seconds in the girls 500m free and was part of both the 200m medley—alongside Sarah Seery, Maccy Soloman and Malaya Santos—and 200m freestyle relay teams, with Seery, Sierra Ceballos and Chloe Kurzenknabe. Ceballos also won the girls 50m free in a time of 27.76.
Deliz was instrumental for the boys and won the 50m (24.18) and 100m (54.10) free events individually. He was also part of the first place 200m medley relay along with Jordan Jacinto, Chris Lee and Zach Gallardo. That same group easily won the 200m freestyle relay later on in the meet for the Cougars, too. Gallardo also won the 200m free (2:04.97).Â
Santos boosted the girls score with two individual victories. She captured the girls 200m individual medley in a time of 2:26.24. She also squeaked past her Alvarez opponent in the 100m backstroke, finisher in .00.18 seconds faster.
Santos recorded her fourth victory of the day with the girls 400m free relay team, which one in 4:19.83. Also on the team was Ali Souza, Soloman and Nicole Andreson. Solomon also won the girls 100m butterfly in a time of 1:05.40.Â
Lee also won the 100m fly on the boys side. He bested his Eagles opponent by winning in 1:06.01 to Alvarez’s 1:38.43 finish.Â
Darrien Yafai rounded out the boys day by winning the 500m free in 5:56.21.Â
The girls JV team also won 84-55, while the boys lost 63-47.Â
The team will host the Monterey Bay League finals and will look to defend its league title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Christopher High.
TENNIS
Cougars top MVC in regular season finale
Cougar coach Patrick McBrearty switched up his lineup for the match against against Monte Vista Christian on Friday. He wanted to give his players that will compete in the match format of next week’s league tournament a taste of what to come.Â
And they rose to the challenge.Â
Christopher beat the Mustangs 5-2 in the regular season finale in Watsonville.Â
The No. 1 through 3 singles players all won their matches, but the No.1Â Destin Cockcroft had the easiest go and won his match 6-0, 7-5.
No. 2 Dominic Nguyen won his first set 6-3, but lost the second 2-6. Nguyen rebounded in the tiebreaker, however, to win 10-7.
No. 3Â Sam Fernandez had a similar fate, winning his first set 6-2 before dropping the second 2-6. He kept his composure and pulled out a 10-8 victory in the tiebreak set.Â
The No. 1 doubles team of Geoffrey He and Isaiah Rugerio breezed by their counterparts to win 6-0, 6-0.Â
No. 2 doubles, Tom Madruga and Jesus Velasquez, also won easily by a 6-1, 6-2 final.Â
No. 4 singles player Branden Irwin was handed a 6-0, 6-0 loss. The No. 3 team of Alfredo Barberena and Michael Davalos also lost.Â
LACROSSE
Cougars pummel York
Christopher’s Anthony Sammut and Jordan Padilla were relentless against York. The duo combined for nine goals in the Cougars’ 18-6 win over the Falcons Friday in Monterey.Â
Sammut had five goals and two assists, while Padilla had four goals.Â
Jacob Zimmerman scored two goals for Christopher and notched an assist. Zach Green also scored two goals for the Cougars.Â
Brad Charon, Evan Essary, Esteban Fabela, Zack Cefalu and Andrew Busch each had a goal for the Cougars, too. Busch also had two assists and Charon had one.Â
Austin Reichert and Jake Cupp also had an assist a piece for Christopher.Â
The Cougars (7-3 overall, 5-3 in league) will take on Pacific Grove at 6 p.m. today on the road.Â
BASEBALL
Chieftains break Cougars’ streak
Palma snapped Christopher’s four-game winning streak, handing it a 10-0 shutout loss Friday at home.Â
The Chieftains jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.They added two runs in the second, third and fourth innings for the final and outhit the Cougars 9-2.Â
Stats for Christopher were not available.Â
The Cougars (11-10 overall, 7-6 in league) will play at Monte Vista Christian at 4 p.m. Tuesday.Â
Balers blank Mustangs
Gilroy was shutout 6-0 by San Benito Friday at Veteran’s Park.Â
