The Christopher girls volleyball team got its season off to a strong start, sweeping Sobrato 3-0 Thursday at home. The Cougars downed the Bulldogs 25-17, 25-23, 25-20.
Katelyn Viray led Christopher’s offense with 16 kills and Samantha Dolan added 12 of her own. Christa Arroyo brought it all together, racking up 35 assists in the game.
Isabel Serna limited the Sobrato offense, coming up with 12 digs in the game.
“We had a good night against a really good opponent,” Cougar coach Brian Calimpong said. “…The squad played much more under control compared to their performance on Tuesday.”
Christopher (1-0) will face fierce competition this weekend when it competes in the annual Spikefest I tournament held at Milpitas and Independence High schools. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and runs through Sunday evening.
Mustangs top Oakwood
Gilroy kicked off its season with a 3-1 victory over Oakwood Thursday in Morgan Hill. The Mustangs topped the Hawks by scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18.

Carmel downs Gilroy
Gilroy lost its season opener 13-2 to Carmel Thursday at home.
The Mustangs kept things close after the first, trailing the Padres 2-1. Carmel broke the game open in the second with six goals to lead 8-1 at the half.
Alexandria Pino and Ariane Lussier scored for Gilroy.
Gilroy (0-1) will face Harbor at 4 p.m. Tuesday at home.
*Note: The Gilroy boys contest against Christopher, which was scheduled for yesterday, was cancelled.
FOOTBALL
Gilroy opens against Live Oak
Gilroy and Live Oak will usher in a new prep football season when the two teams meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
With construction of the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex ongoing, the game has been relocated to Christopher High School. Next Friday’s game against Sobrato—7:30 p.m. Sept. 11—will also be played at CHS.
