Dear Editor,
Bill Lindsteadt helped ruin Gilroy and now he wants to go ruin Mendocino. Why not stay here and enjoy the fruits of his labor? What, is Gilroy no longer a place to retire? Our downtown has never been worse with small businesses unable to compete with the buying power of large corporations: it is all but abandoned. Most of the people I know have left Gilroy in the last eight years because they can’t afford to live here, and felt little hope for our town’s diminishing quality of life. If we rate quality of life by how much junk we can get from Wal-Mart instead of the health and well being of our community than we really have lost all of our praiseworthy citizens to nominate.
It seems our economist and citizen of the year never considered that when you spend your money at privately owned local businesses rather than going to places like Wal-Mart the money goes to support a local family and more than 50 percent of the money stays in the community. But if you go to Wal-Mart only 10 percent of your money stays in the community, or less, and more often than not you support sweat shops, bad labor and environmental policies as well as say good bye to our farming community and hello to parking lots.
I suppose if you’re paid by the city, or plan to sell your home and leave the community this sort of “economic development” is good, but for the rest of us it is a disaster. Perhaps he just has something against farmland. I just feel sorry for Mendocino.
