Dear Editor:
Gilroy has many perks. Years ago, we had weekly street sweepers, but with budget cuts, that tax-paid service had to be cut. Then, a few years ago, the street sweepers were back! I believe I read in The Dispatch, that this service was contracted out, but, of course, was being paid for by the city (the taxpayers). Everyone with garbage service has been notified that the street sweepers would be coming around the next business day after garbage service every other week. It is too bad that the contractor can’t do his job very well due to the many, many parked cars on the streets of Gilroy.
Would it be too much to ask our residents to remove their cars for the streets during set hours on each street’s cleaning day? I imagine the time saved by the contractor by being able to clean a street without weaving in and out of the parked cars would be a real time saver, but most importantly, our streets would indeed be cleaned as we have contracted the street sweepers to do! All the trash and leaves under those parked cars stay there each week.
Other cities in the Bay Area have rules and even ticket cars that are parked on street cleaning day. I know the ticketing of those cars would be a city expense, but maybe the city could just ask residents to park their cars off the streets on their respective cleaning days. In these times, it would be nice to see our taxpaying dollars get what they’re paying for!
