Q: Why do people get goosebumps?
A: Goosebumps are left over from when people used to be covered in fur.
They are caused by the contraction of tiny muscles at the base of each strand of body hair, and when the muscles contract, they cause the hair to puff up.
This had two purposes. First, it created and insulating layer of air next to the skin that helped kept the body warm in cold weather.
Secondly, it gave our furry forebears a larger and more menacing appearance in the face of danger. That’s why you get goosebumps when you are frightened.
Q: Why do pianos have black and white keys?
A: The white keys are a result of a long-ago decision to cover those keys in ivory because of its beauty, durability and high susceptibility to polish.
To make the sharps and flats, piano builders decided to use a substance close to ivory in feel and appearance, but visually very distinguishable from the white keys.
These requirements were met by ebony wood. It is hard, heavy , durable, easily polished and very, very black.
