GILROY – An 18-year-old says a man with a knife and a bandana over his face entered his bedroom around midnight and demanded his wallet, according to city police.

The alleged victim said he handed over the wallet during the July 9 home invasion, but it contained only $9, according to his mother who asked to remain anonymous.

The robber dropped the wallet in frustration according to the mother and then fled the house at the north end of Murray Avenue, which belongs to the young man’s grandfather.

Police were called and said they used numerous officers and a dog to search the neighborhood for the suspect, but to no avail.

“This is something that is very unusual,” police Sgt. John Sheedy said referring to home invasions. “It doesn’t happen very often.”

The mother, however, said she believes the neighborhood around north Murray “is increasingly becoming infested with crime.”

Police do not believe the incident is gang-related, according to Sgt. Greg Flippo of the city police Anti-Crime Team, a gang and drug specialty unit.
