CALSTAR expands hours

GILROY – California Shock/Trauma Air Rescue today expanded the hours for its Salinas helicopter crew, going from three days a week to four.

This will better serve San Benito County, since the Salinas base is the closest one to Hollister, and take pressure off CALSTAR’s busy Gilroy station.

CALSTAR air ambulance crews fly patients to trauma centers, often saving lives in the process. CALSTAR, a nonprofit agency, flies patients regardless of their ability to pay.

The Salinas CALSTAR base previously operated from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Monday, without a break in service. Starting today, it will open at 10 a.m. Thursday.

CALSTAR Advisory Board member Chris Coté said the board is looking for funding to open the Salinas base seven days a week in the future. The Gilroy base is the busiest of CALSTAR’s seven locations, Coté said.
