James John Merenda, a loving husband, father and grandfather,
died at his home on Friday, April 23, 2004. He was 84.
James John Merenda, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died at his home on Friday, April 23, 2004. He was 84.
Born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Arma, Kansas, Mr. Merenda worked for Gilroy Lumber Co. for 30 years before retiring. He was a World War II Veteran, and an active member and past commander of American Legion Post 669.
Mr. Merenda had a passion for golf and was very active at the local golf course participating in numerous tournaments.
He had a love for sports and was a dedicated 49er faithful.
He also volunteered for Special Olympics and was a past member of The Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Merenda was very well known in the community and will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Merenda and his loving wife Mercedes, would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 25.
He also is survived by his son, James Frank Merenda and daughter in law, Annette Merenda; grandchildren, Jamie Merenda, Kathy Merenda-Horton, Angel Fox and Jimmy Peterson; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was a brother to Joseph Merenda, Rose Caruso, Sue Serafin and Angie Kellar and also uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter Julie Haakinson.
A vigil service was held at Wednesday at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
A funeral service was held this morning, and a funeral Mass was celebrated this morning as well as St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
