Possible telemarketing scam alert

The California Department of Education wants residents to be aware of a possible telemarketing scam, where unsolicited callers are extracting personal information from members of the public under the ruse of being representatives for the state agency.
The CDE received information from concerned citizens that they received calls asking about the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, standardized test, which gives students firsthand practice for the college entrance examination. The caller asks for personal information, credit card numbers and more, according to the CDE release.
The caller ID seems to show the call is coming from the State of California or the main telephone line of the CDE. However, these calls do not come from the CDE.
Law enforcement agencies are looking into the potential scam. Anyone who receives such a call is instructed not to answer any questions and hang up immediately. Residents can also file a complaint online directly with the Federal Trade Commission. Click here
