The girls Blue Jays of Gilroy’s recreational soccer league
recently wrapped up their season by finishing undefeated in the
6-7-year-old division. Coached by Gene Nanez and Jimmy Tomasetti,
each girl was able to grow and improve their skills each week while
piling up victories, according to coach Nanez.

Emphasizing playing a position, passing and teamwork, which resulted in success on the field, the Blue Jays were balanced in their scoring as five different forwards were able to net goals over the course of the schedule. The midfield was solid in advancing the ball up field while the defense was difficult to penetrate.
“An important element of the team’s success was that they believe themselves to be a family on the field – all sisters,” Nanez said. The coach also acknowledged the support the team had from parents, grandparents and siblings.
The Blue Jays were led by Natalie Anden, Avery Harding and Gabriella Marquez at forward. The midfield was controlled by Carson Gilroy, Riley Tomasetti, and Hollyn Urrabazo. Defensively, the team was led by Kayla Nanez and Cameron Rogers, while Dolores Soledad Andrade contributed at goalie and forward. Noelle Salcido, Maria Jose Martinez, Amaya Raoof and Halee Neudeck all played key roles in the successful season at varying positions.
Coaches Nanez and Tomasetti said they were proud to have had the opportunity to coach the team, get to know the girls personally and see them excited about practice, games, and being together, learning the game of soccer as a soccer family.
