Robert Keeler turned 60 Sunday, but he was unable to celebrate. Keeler, who was riding his motorcycle on First Street the evening of Sept. 26, was struck by a motorist who made an illegal turn, police said. He remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Valley Medical Center, said Larry Connell, Keeler’s father-in-law.

The driver of the car – whose name has not been released by police – was not injured and was released at the scene, police said. Police did not cite the driver, but the accident is under investigation and could result in an arrest, police said.

“He is still in intensive care at Valley Medical Center in an induced coma,” Connell said. “But he is steadily improving.”

About 5:45 p.m. Sept. 26, Keeler – an avid motorcyclist and union metal worker – was headed westbound on the 700 block of First Street, which stretches from Miller Avenue to Wren Avenue, police said. A car that was in a right turn only lane then turned left and pulled out in front of Keeler. Police did not say whether the motorcyclist hit the car or the car hit the motorcyclist.

Neither of the motorists were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, police said.

Now, more than 10 days after the accident, Connell is anxious to learn more.

“I was told the investigating officer isn’t finished with the report,” he said.

Connell does know that his son-in-law was out of surgery four hours after the accident, in which suffered head trauma. He was wearing a helmet, Connell said, but believes it came off during the accident.
