Corner is filthy
“Red Phone, this is in regards to Eighth and Rosanna Street near Glen View Elementary School. Somebody needs to check that corner section out. It is filthy.”
and,
“Recently I read an article about a home located on Wren Avenue near Sixth Street in Gilroy that had a bunch of trash and cars that were being worked on. Well it seemed to work there and it’s beginning to look better. We have the same problem here on Garden Court. A home there has about seven cars that are dismantled or are being worked on, trash that lays next to the neighbors fence, which is disgusting and not to mention dangerous for all the children that play around there. Can you help?”
and,
“A home on Orchard Drive has been an eyesore, health hazard and fire trap for years. Why do those of us living on and driving up and down Orchard continually have to be subjected to this as well as the neighbors behind it? I don’t believe the best fire department in the world could ever contain a fire to this dwelling should one ever break out, and the health department surely would condemn it if notified. The conditions in and surrounding this home have put the entire neighborhood in jeopardy. Why isn’t or hasn’t the city done something to rectify this condition?”
Dear Thrice Disgusted,
Red Phone knows any complaints regarding trash, building codes and health and safety codes should be addressed to the city’s code enforcement department. City officials do not typically patrol neighborhoods looking for these types of violations, however they will respond to complaints. To file one, call 846-0264. Then, call Red Phone and let us know how things turned out.
Dowdy Street resident needs help
“In the neighborhood of Dowdy Street between Sixth and Seventh streets lives an elderly man who is causing problems. I’m sure he needs help. He apparently is very dissatisfied within himself and doesn’t know how to overcome it, so he attacks others. He causes problems with the children and is now causing people to move away. Isn’t there a group of people who help with persons like him? He needs to learn to like himself better so that he doesn’t take it out on the neighbors. Somewhere in Gilroy there must be those who know how to help people like him. If there is such a group, they could visit the neighborhood of Dowdy and see what could be done.”
Dear Doesn’t Like Dowdy,
Red Phone contacted Lisa DeSilva, Director of Development for Community Solutions. She said it is difficult to respond without having more specific issues of how exactly he is acting out and what he his doing to the neighbors and children.
“I assume that the police have been called if his behavior is threatening in any way,” she said. “He could be lonely and unhappy and depressed, as you mentioned. Since he is an independent adult, services can only be provided to him that he requests and agrees to. However, it might be helpful for the neighbors if one of them contacts either Catholic Charities Daybreak Program at 848-9175 or the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center at 846-1480 to give the specifics and get advice as to how best to interface/intervene with this person.
Good caller, Red Phone hopes you can call one of the above numbers and get this gentleman any help he might need, before things take a turn for the worse. Then, call Red Phone and let us know how things turned out.
