Ashley Harrington overcame a shaky start to combine with Melinda Ortiz on a four-hitter as GHS turned back host Pioneer 5-0.
Harrington walked the bases loaded in the first inning but got out of the inning with a strikeout and was in command the rest of the way, allowing three hits and striking out four. Ortiz pitched the final two innings, allowing a hit and striking out five.
It was Gilroy’s second shutout in two days. GHS (3-0) has used three pitchers, who have combined to allow one run in three games.
For the second straight game, Gilroy had just four hits. GHS compensated for the lack of offense by playing opportunistic ball, taking the extra base whenever possible.
“Their pitcher had a lot of movement on the ball, and we had a little trouble getting used to it,” GHS coach Catherine Hallada said. “We adjusted the second time (through the order).”
Gilroy used two-run innings in the third and fourth to take control of the game. Amanda Tellez had a hit and two RBI. Lauryn Chris had a hit and scored two runs for GHS, which tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Jasmine Perez and Alicia Reese had Gilroy’s other hits.
“We’re playing well,” Hallada said. “I am confident about what they can do. But I don’t want them too confident because all 13 girls have to keep their minds on each game.”
GHS has its third game in as many days today when it hosts St. Francis at 3:45pm.
