Watsonville – This is one Gilroy would like to forget.
Watsonville swept the Mustangs, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22, Thursday in a Tri-County Athletic League match that undoubtedly ranks as Gilroy’s worst loss of the season.
It was the second win for the Wildcatz (2-9 in TCAL), who lost in three games to the Mustangs the last time the teams met.
“They have a couple of good hitters and we were still blocking them,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “They’re scrappy and they dig it when we do block them. We were just flat. There was not one particular thing.”
Actually, the unforced errors weren’t that bad for the Mustangs (9-21 overall, 4-8 TCAL). They had eight service errors and 13 attack errors, figures that have been higher this season when Gilroy won.
If there was one area the Mustangs struggled with it was their passing. Dig numbers were way down with three back row players combining for 12.
“Our passing was awful,” Grogan said. “We couldn’t get the ball high enough.”
Kevin Bruce and Renz Campos were the offensive leaders, combining for 13 kills. Bruce also had 10 service points and two blocks. Greg Calimpong had 23 assists and three service aces.
“We had a pretty good practice Wednesday,” Grogan said. “I kept them tempo up high. We can’t play like this against Palma.”
Gilroy’s game with the Chieftains at 6:30pm Tuesday is the Mustangs’ home finale.
