Around 50 people braved the overcast weather to attend the inaugural “Vineyard Day” at Sarah’s Vineyard last Thursday according to Sheldon Haynie, president of the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley.
The event, nestled in bucolic scenery a short drive west of Gilroy on Hecker Pass Highway, allowed both professional growers and curious locals the opportunity to learn about all things vine, via a series of workshops and seminars.
John Aver, of Aver Family Vineyards in Gilroy, was tasked with the job of judging the vine pruning competition.
As the heavens opened and the small crowd that had assembled ran for shelter, two fearless competitors battled it out with their pruning shears. Ultimately, Sarah’s Vineyard worker Eleazar Celestino triumphed over workmate Alvaro Cervantes to be crowned champion.
