City Public Information Officer Joe Kline announced today that the City of Gilroy has received an Award of Excellence from the California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) for the Christopher High School Aquatic Center, which is located on the campus at Day Road.

The City of Gilroy Recreation Department is being recognized in the category of Excellence in Design. CHS’s aquatic facility will be honored at the 2013 California Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference, held March 6-8 in San Jose.

The CHS Aquatic Center is a joint project between the City of Gilroy and the Gilroy Unified School District. It’s features include the zero entry pool, height and age-appropriate water slides and play structure, water sprays and motor development-appropriate areas. A competition pool with diving boards is also available. The center’s features encourage children and adults to be active and playful while participating in water activities and are usable for individuals of all swimming abilities.

“The CPRS awards program is the highest recognition our agency can receive and our award is a credit to the staff, volunteers and partners that made this happen,” said Recreation Department Director Maria De Leon. “We are honored to receive this award on behalf of our residents.”

CPRS Executive Director Jane Adams says agencies such as the City of Gilroy and GUSD “represent the finest in recreation programming and community-wide initiatives” in California.

CPRS is a membership organization with 3400 members representing the 535 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state. The mission of CPRS is to advance the profession and its members through education, networking, resources, and advocacy.
