“Meowllo”, my name is Beau and I am a 10 years “young” cat from the Santa Clara County San Martin Animal Shelter. I’m here to speak for all of the many mature cats that are currently at the shelter.
Every day I hear the same words from the people that visit the cat room. “Do you have any kittens?” It makes us all want to howl! Why is it that everyone wants a little kitten? Oh yes, they are cute and act silly, but seriously, us cats that are 6 years old or more, have a great deal to offer. So, I’d like to suggest the following top 5 reasons for adopting us older cats:
5. You get what you see. There will be no growth surprises from us and you know what you’re getting in the personality department! This makes it easier for us to find you…the perfect match!
4. Our social skills are solid. We are less demanding; more relaxed and need less supervision and work than kittens. We know when it’s time to play and time to rest! We have good mealtime manners and don’t play around in the litter box. We are also usually “kid smart”. Most of us are just seeking a warm lap, some food and your love! You don’t need to teach us “older” cats new tricks.
3. Us high mileage cats still run great! We aren’t like used cars. We are not at a shelter because we are defective or worn out. Many of us have simply outlived our former owners or been unable to join them at a new apartment or nursing home. Many of us are brought to a shelter after a family member develops allergies. Unlike those younger kittens, we have been fully vaccinated.
2. I’d like to say we are senior “Kitizens”! Our average life span is now 16, with many of us living to see 20 years, if we are well cared for. Many of the cats here at the shelter are around 8 years young. That is only considered middle aged. And while I’m thinking about it…kittens aren’t kittens forever!
1. And my top reason for you to consider us, is that our gratitude to your giving us a loving home, will be repaid ten-fold. Some of us may need a little extra patience while adjusting to a new home, but once we feel safe and secure again, we will give you years of faithful companionship and unconditional love. Us “senior kiticens” rock …between naps!
