Gavilan College canceled winter classes due to state budget cuts, the school announced today.
The college looked at the costs of holding and staffing classes during the winter session and decided the price was too great, wrote Kathleen Rose, Gavilan’s vice president of instruction, in an e-mail to all staff members. The college will be able to offer more classes in the spring semester as a result. The winter session had been slated for January 4 through 29.
California legislators slashed the community college budgets in this summer’s round of budget cuts. Though demand for classes at community colleges is rising, the state has instructed colleges to bring their enrollment down by 3 percent, according to a Gavilan press release.
“In order to serve as many students as possible with reduced funds, resources must be allocated where they can be most effective,” the press release reads.
The cancellation of the winter session will allow more students to enroll a wider variety of classes in the spring, according to the press release.
