GILROY – A third straight-sets victory on the season has Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team perfect after five matches.

Taking on visiting Sobrato Friday night, the Mustangs were paced by 33 assists and three blocks by Greg Calimpong to win 25-18, 25-14, 25-14.

Gilroy’s Alfred Medenceles and Samuel Howard both had double-figures in kills with 14 and 12, respectively, while Nico Sandoval had a team-high 11 digs.

First-year coach Scott Martin, a 2003 GHS graduate, said the team started a little slow in the preseason as players began to buy into the new system, but everything has been steady since.

“I can’t remember a start like this,” Martin said. “It’s been a little surreal. Everything is clicking.”

Gilroy (5-0) will begin Tri-County Athletic League play today when it travels to Monterey for a 6:30 p.m. match.
