The Orchard Valley Fury 13-and-under girls soccer team clinched its first league championship last Saturday with a 1-0 win over the Redwood Juventas.

It was a must-win game for the Fury, leading the league by just one point going into Saturday’s final weekend of regular-season play. The game remained scoreless 10 minutes into the second half when Karlie Juarez scored the only goal, with an assist by Drake Basso.

The Fury took sole possession of first place the week prior with an exciting 2-0 win over the Sunnyvale Roadrunners, snapping the Roadrunners 19-game winning streak. Kendra Rice booted in the first goal of the game, with Brigid Lowney setting up the second goal for the Fury.

The Fury is lead by coach Steve Lowney and assistant coach Dave Burnett. Defense played a key role in the Fury’s success this season, allowing a league-low eight goals in 10 games and posting five shutouts.

Leading the backfield are goalies Macey Delgado and Vangie McNamarra, stopper Maddie Roster, sweeper Claire Giacalone, Marquel Love, Erin Mank, Lana Burnett, Marie Law, and Alyssa Feskanin. Midfielders Brigid Lowney, Emilie Allaert, Drake Basso, and Carly McPolin are major contributors both offensively and defensively. And forwards Ally Weldon, Caitlin Teddleton, Karlie Juarez, and Kendra Rice keep the opponent’s defenders and goalie on their toes with their speed and relentless shooting.
