THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:

Do you think the Gilroy school district should charge up to $1 per bus ride?

Yes: 7 No: 5

■ Tough one – poor will ride for free and working class will be stuck with the bill.

â–  YES. All students need to share these costs, or alternatively, eliminate a few management jobs in GUSD HQ.

â–  Yes. Considering that busing is not required (and many districts have dropped busing completely), a minimal charge for usage is appropriate.

â–  Yes, if the district needs the money. Five dollars a week is a bargain compared to public transportation.

â–  No. I feel it would be more equitable if there was a sliding scale for families that could afford the price or help for ones who couldn’t. We should encourage public transportation, but to put a blanket price on a one way ride is ridiculous.

â–  No. What a sad state of affairs when children must pay for a bus ride to school. Many live in the rural regions of Gilroy. My understanding is most come to schools hungry. If families have trouble feeding their children, how would they pay $1 twice a day five days per week?
