With Christmas fast approaching, many homeless animals do not have a home for the holidays. The Santa Clara County Animal Shelter hopes to change that with their December adoption special.
The WeCare coalition, which consists of six Silicon Valley animal shelters including the Santa Clara County Animal Shelter at 12370 Murphy Ave. in San Martin, is hosting a “Home for the Holidays” campaign that features $12 adoptions throughout the month of December.
Normal adoption fees for cats and dogs is $90 and $110.
The $12 adoption special is valid for all adult dogs and cats and includes spay/neuter surgery; microchip ID implantation and registration; age-appropriate vaccinations; de-fleaing and de-worming and FIV/FeLV testing. Pet owners will also receive coupons for their first veterinarian visit as well as $5 off their pet’s food.
WeCare urges residents to seek a new pet from local animal shelters before going to a breeder or pet store, explains Albert Escobar, Program Manager for the County of Santa Clara Animal Control.
The county shelter has recently seen a decrease in congestion since the special kicked off in December, Escobar noted, and staff wants to see that trend stay strong.
“We are hoping we can continue to get many animals out of the shelter and into loving homes,” he added.
More than 600 animals have been adopted countywide this month, with more than 100 of those animals coming from the San Martin shelter. Escobar is optimistic the WeCare coalition can reach its goal of 1,200 adoptions by the end of December.
“We are very happy that it is successful, but a lot still need homes,” he said.
The Santa Clara County Animal Shelter will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shelter will be open Christmas Eve but will be closed Christmas Day.
