Students at Gilroy High School came together Monday to demonstrate support for their grieving classmate.

Gilroy native Dina Lopez, a wife and mother of four including GHS junior Alyssa Lopez, passed away last weekend after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Dina was diagnosed in September 2010.

A large number of GHS students wore pink and rallied around the campus centennial circle when Alyssa arrived at school Monday. Students held up a giant sign that read, “GHS loves Dina Lopez, gone but never forgotten, and forever in our hearts.”

“I was very proud of how our students and staff came together to support this family,” noted GHS Principal Marco Sanchez via email.

Alyssa has an older sibling, Shawn, who is a senior at Christopher High School, and two younger siblings who attend South Valley Middle School and Rod Kelley Elementary. The family lives in Gilroy.
