The Christopher High girls varsity water polo team defeated Scotts Valley 10-5 in a Monterey Bay League Pacific Division road contest Monday night.

Eight of the team’s goals came in the second half. The Cougars improved to 2-1 in the division.

• Despite the score, head coach Travis Gamble said he saw an intensity that he had been asking his Gilroy High gorls varsity water polo players to exhibit.

And though a 16-5 loss was the result against Monterey on Monday, Gamble said a solid fourth quarter could prove to be the turning point for the 0-4 Mustangs.

“I am very happy with our efforts,” he said. “It was the best game yet against a very strong team.”

Katie Clrck scored three goals and Abby Kienle, whose play prompted kind compliments from the opposing coach, Gamble said, had two goals.

TENNIS

A shorthanded Christopher High girls varsity tennis team took on nonleague opponent Notre Dame on Monday, losing 7-0.

Head coach Patrick McBrearty had to shuffle his lineup with three of his singles players unavailable.

The two players who were moved from doubles to singles – Tiffany Roberts and Laura Freiberg – went the distance and dropped their matches in third-set tiebreakers. That, too, happened with Adena Chen, who stepped into the No. 1-singles role from her usual spot at No. 3.
