Dear Editor,
It completely amazes me to witness the blatant arrogance of Mr. Wayne Scott, the math teacher at Gilroy High that is encouraging other teachers to withdraw any support for the parent club.
This parent club is made up of caring and concerned parents who volunteer their valuable time to make sure that their children have every access to a quality education during these important years. This parent club works hard to support these teachers and to keep open communication between teachers and parents of the students.
Mr. Scott’s actions are a slap the face to every concerned parent.
The parent club at Gilroy High, the School Board, as well as most parents do not advocate a teacher bringing in their political ideologies into the classroom. Day of “silence” or not, the teachers who participated in this event made their political views quite clear.
As stated by a parent club member, “A good teacher does not reveal his/her political stance on issues, in order to effectively teach.”
This is not a matter of “hate” as certain teachers and Dispatch columnist Dennis Taylor state. This is about quality education.
I am a “so-called Christian” as Mr. Taylor so negatively referred to in his column. I find a bit of irony with Mr. Taylor advocating discrimination and intolerance of Christians, all because we want our public educators to educate are children on approved academics in the classroom, not the forum of the Gay-Straight Alliance.
If there is a discrimination issue at this high school, as individual teachers are claiming, then why not encourage the administration to hold a schoolwide assembly to educate students that it is WRONG to discriminate against anyone that differs in areas of race, religion, gender, physical abilities, etc.
Pulling support from the very parent club that supports these teachers and students, is a disgrace and completely irresponsible of any teachers that participate. How do these actions in any way benefit the students?
The answer is that they do not and are counterproductive. These teachers need to remember, these are our children that they are instructing, and we as parents have a RIGHT to to be 100 percent involved in their education.
