Jr. High squad wins title in first seventh grade championship
appearance
Morgan Hill – The Brownell Junior High hoopsters entered last week’s tournament as the No. 2 seed but were still not being given much chance to win by their competitors. In fact one coach went so far as to call his team’s game against Brownell “a warm-up for the next round.”
Well by the time the dust settled Brownell had the last laugh and was the team left hoisting the trophy.
In Brownell’s opening game against Sierramant they squeaked out a 54-50 road victory. Cameron Yawary led all scorers with 26 points including 5 three-pointers. Chris Catanzaro added 16 points and Andy Been dropped in 8 points.
In the semifinals at Leyva the Brownell squad won 58-52 with Catanzaro leading all scorers while Yawary added 12 and Been dropped in 8 points.
In the championship game against the No. 1 seeded Davis squad both teams were heavy on the defensive end and Brownell edged out the 39-33 victory.
“This is an impressive win considering just one week ago Davis beat us by 11 points,” said head coach Joe Lampkin. “This continues a dynasty that is in the making here at Brownell. For the last four years we’ve been in the championship game. Our eighth grade team won two and lost one over the last three years and now we’ve won at the seventh grade level.”
