GHS senior takes first in Rotary speech contest

Gilroy – Gilroy High School senior Carly Kennedy took first place in the annual Gilroy Rotary Club Speech Contest. GHS junior Anneliese Zelina took second, and senior Phillip Higgins took third place.

This year’s theme was “Leading the Way,” and Kennedy began her speech by citing the work of Benjamin Franklin in 1752 with his infamous kite and the discovery of electricity. Kennedy now goes on the the area level contest, which includes the club level winners from Morgan Hill, Hollister, Salinas, and San Juan Bautista, in March.

Elks Lodge puts on fashion show

Gilroy – Elks Lodge #1567 Fashion Show, “Springtime in the Rose Garden,” March 10. Show will feature fashions and accessories from local boutiques and stores. This event begins with no-host cocktails at 11am, luncheon at noon and fashion show from 1 to 2:30pm.

All proceeds benefit the Elks philanthropic efforts to help crippled and disabled children. Tickets will go on sale Saturday from 10am to 1pm for $25 per person at the Elk’s Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. Tickets will also be sold after Saturday and may be picked up, Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm at the Lodge Office. Details: 842-9397

Rucker presents ‘Jack and the Giant’

Gilroy – This children’s play, directed by Colleen Chipman, will show Friday, Feb. 9 at 7pm and Saturday, Feb., 10 at 2 and 7pm. Show is at Rucker School, 325 Santa Clara Ave. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children age 3 and older.

Wash the dust of your ride

Gilroy – The Gilroy Presbyterian Church will conduct a free car wash 10am, Feb. 17 to support its Mexicali Mission Trip this Easter vacation. They won’t stop until 100 cars have been washed. The car wash will be held at the 76 Station at 10th and Monterey streets. Donations accepted but not required.

Cash for college events this month

Gilroy – South County Cal-SOAP and Gavilan Community College invite seniors and their parents to attend the Cash for College event. Families will have the opportunity to get questions answered in regards to the financial aid process, including grants, loans, work-study and scholarships. When the appropriate information is brought to the event the student will be able to complete their financial aid application. All events are held from 6 to 8pm. The first is at Sobrato High School Tuesday, then at Anzar High School Feb. 27 and at Gilroy High School Feb. 28. Details: 846-7504.
