“We’re painting the building at WHAT time?” asks the weary Leadership Gilroy participant, who doubles as a Blues Diva on the weekends and has a gig the night before until 2 a.m. “6 a.m.” answers Project Leader Kristi Abrams. OUCH! Yeah, I guess we don’t want to paint in the heat. To sleep or not to sleep – that was the question.
I opted to catch three hours of divine shuteye, until that nasty alarm shocked me out of my reverie. Time to get on my shorts and shades. I can’t let my classmates down, and hey – we‚ve only got three classes left. I’m going to miss these people! The Leadership Class of 2003 chose to paint a building at San Ysidro as their leadership class project. In addition, we decided to document the process through a video that a few classmates helped produce. The mini-documentary features interviews with class participants, pictures of past class activities and trips, as well as footage of the “happy” painters at work. I’m still amazed at what a good attitude everyone had, considering it was 6 a.m. on a Saturday.
The idea of the video is to help publicize Leadership Gilroy, and encourage other community members to get involved. Participants are from all walks of life, as you’ll see on the video. All of the people interviewed comment on what a positive experience the class has been, in terms of opening their eyes to how Gilroy works, and to the different facets of our city. Others comment on what a valuable networking opportunity the class is.
I’ve personally enjoyed working in a team environment with these people over the last nine months. It’s been well worth the investment.
While the Leadership Gilroy video won’t be ready until late August, a few clips from the taping will be shown on Gavilan Connections, a new show produced and directed by Gavilan’s Public Information Officer Jan Bernstein-Chargin, The program highlights community activities that Gavilan is involved with.
