DEAR EDITOR:

I am a junior at Gilroy High School and I would like to tell all Gilroyans about a cause that my mom and I have gotten involved in. It is called “Operation Yellow Ribbon.” It is a project that started 12 years ago as one young man’s service project for his Eagle Scout Award and resulted in sending 11.5 tons of care packages to troops in Operation Desert Storm. Now it is being revived for the troops stationed in the Middle East fighting for our freedoms.

We would love to get help from anyone who wants to help. Whether you think we should go to war or not … our fellow citizens over seas still need to know that we support them. Right now, over 200,000 American troops are stationed overseas in the Middle East protecting our freedoms.

Operation Yellow Ribbon collects all types of things to send to soldiers stationed in the Middle East. They also collect cards and letters from civilians who want to help lift the spirits of those away from their family’s and friends. Getting a letter from “home” can really make a big difference in a soldier’s day. Many of the soldiers are not able to take showers very often. So, many things are needed to keep them smelling good.

We are having a “care package” packing day on March 22 and will continue to collect and send packages to the troops as donations come in.

In Gilroy the only donation station that we have set up so far is: Gilroy Chiropratic Center, Hecker Pass Plaza, 1230 First Street, 848-3666.

Other locations in Gilroy are being set up right now. For more information visit the website at http://www.operationyellowribbon.org

If you donate or write letters they are very greatly appreciated and will be used.

Stephanie Smith, Gilroy
