Dear Editor:

Cynthia Walker’s “hit-piece” column on Friday, Oct. 31 was a lying and truly mud-slinging piece of journalism. In her article she stated that several Council candidates as well as mayoral candidate, Lupe Arellano “took their business out of the city, putting the unions first and Gilroy last.”

As the treasurer for Lupe Arellano’s campaign, I know for a fact that Lupe spent a lot of money here in Gilroy – a fact, that Cynthia could have checked up on in the public records of candidate statements at Gilroy City Hall.

Lupe had her lawn and billboard signs made here in Gilroy at Z Graphics, her door-to-door fliers were copied at Office Max in Gilroy and her campaign T-shirts were printed at California Silkscreening in Gilroy.

From now on, I will have a hard time believing anything Cynthia Walker says in her columns.

Now, while we are on the subject of Lupe Arellano’s campaign for mayor, I would like to tell the citizens of Gilroy why they should consider voting for Lupe.

Lupe is a native Gilroyan and an Army veteran. She has the experience (former councilwoman and planning commissioner), the education (alumnus of the University of San Francisco) and community involvement to lead our city.

Most importantly, because she and her husband have two young daughters, Lupe cares tremendously about the city your children as well as hers are growing up in.

Lupe’s voting record while she was a councilmember has proven that she will do what she says.

During her council term Lupe initiated the plan for downtown that now includes the present new streetscape. She also, brought up the vote that sped up the completion date for three parks in the Northwest quadrant of town.

So for those of you:

• who want a healthy and safe town in which to raise your children,

• who want to retain Gilroy’s surrounding, beautiful countryside,

• who escaped the big cities in Silicon Valley in order to raise their families in a friendly, rural town and want to see it stay that way,

• who do not want Gilroy to become just an extension of San Jose,

• who would like a mayor who is not easily influenced by development interests

• who want Gilroy to focus on attracting environmentally clean industries with high-paying jobs,

• who want a mayor who will not hesitate to slow down residential growth if our schools or our police and fire services become over-burdened,

• who need an affordable home,

• and who want a mayor who will listen to your concerns and will set a course for a well-planned community that includes all of its citizens – your best choice for mayor is GUADALUPE “LUPE” ARELLANO.
