Anchorpoint Christian boys and girls hoops have successful first
year, taking first and second in CAL
Special to the Dispatch
In its first year of Coastal Athletic League play, the Anchorpoint Christian boys basketball team clinched the league championship with a 73-62 win over York School of Monterey last Thursday to finish with a perfect 10-0 record.
The Warriors were led by point guard Adrian Rodriguez’s 18 points, nine steals and nine assists. Robert Apolinar (20 points, 15 rebounds), Daniel Gutierrez (15 points, 6 rebounds), Victor Rodriguez and Michael Seelie also had big contributions against York.
Playing big roles in the perfect season were Joseph Apolinar, Taylor Harrington, Joseph Johnston, Travis Kaeini, Mark Pieneda and Andrew Rodriguez.
“They accomplished more than I could have ever imagined for this year,” said Anchorpoint head coach K.C. Adams. “For a team that has to travel down the Monterey Coast for all games because they have no home court, they have really made a major accomplishment for a second-year school.”
The Lady Warriors went 8-2 in CAL play and finished second. The team was led by explosive point guard Desiree Piece and power forward Chelsey Urbanski, who scored 20 points apiece in a 60-20 win over York. In that game, the defensive efforts of Cassie Solis, Olivia Echeverria and Danielle Payne limited York. Raeanne Solorio, Anastatia Loyd and Cynthia Cerdan helped power the offense.
Adams said he was proud of his team, which played much bigger than its small stature
“Last year, the girls only won one, tied one,” he said. “This year, they have over 15 wins, all coming from hard work and overcoming many obstacles.”
The CAL playoffs take place this week at Calvary Chapel High in Salinas. Due to a first-round forfeit, the boys team has automatically advanced to Saturday’s championship game, which will be played at noon. The girls played its first round game Thursday at 4:30pm.
After the league playoffs, both teams will move on to the Central Coast Section playoffs.
