Jim McCann, playing the role of Serge, performs during a dress rehearsal for the Limelight Actors Theater production of Art at the Gilroy Center for the Arts.

“Art,” a French play, originally premiered in Paris in 1994 and was the brainchild of prolific French playwright Yasmina Reza. It was translated into English by British playwright Christopher Hampton and opened in London in 1996. “Art” went on to win many awards, including a Tony on Broadway in 1998.
Limelight Actors Theater’s “Art” is a comedy with three men (each with different levels of sophistication); it poses questions about friendship, their interactions and their reactions to a piece of art that strains their relationship.
Serge (Jim McCann) proudly invests 200,000 Euros in a painting that is all white—and if you look close enough, you’ll see a few lines running through it. Marc (Jason Harris) feels it’s a joke, insults the purchase and raises the question of the knowledge of art his friend has shown. Yvan (Scott Lynch), the unconfident peacemaker of the trio, tries to placate both friends while keeping their friendship. He has his own problems with his up and coming wedding. His monologue at the opening of the second act is hilarious and well presented.
They use the painting as a reason to harass one another over their handling various past missteps in their lives.
The simple set by multitalented Kevin Heath combined with C.J. Wallace’s lighting and the ever-present white painting hovering in the scenes creates a comfortable place for the audience to enjoy.
Heath, also the director, moves his notable cast with a gusto that keeps the piece moving with highly amusing dialogue.
“Art” leaves spectators with a giggle for the rest of the evening.
