Dear Editor:

I’ve never been involved in city politics before, but the arts have always been special to me.

I read in the local newspapers how some homeowners will have to give up land surrounding their property as well as some of their homes to build the arts center. Why can’t another Gilroy location be pursued?

There must be a location away from the train station. The train whistle will just spoil every event. We should have a place where children and seniors can be easily dropped off and feel safe. The lighting is very poor.

I do not consider this location to be Gilroy’s downtown! The northwest quadrant is busier, as far as businesses that are patroned. The citizens attending culture arts events would prefer attending them away from downtown.

There isn’t enough room to expand for cultural growth. Just where will you do set construction? Where will you store sets, costumes, props, etc.? There isn’t enough room for all of that. What about classrooms for the different arts? Where is the parking going to be? Oh, in front of all the homes in that area? You’re going to bother the homeowners with traffic and never finding a parking space.

Could there be hidden agendas on the city’s part or the task force members? City officials and members of the task force – you’re making a very bad choice. Where is the money to come from?
