GILROY – Seven Mustangs earned themselves all-league recognition in the Tri-County Athletic league, two more garnered honorable mention status and one took home the sportsmanship award capping an 18-10-1 mark, a second-place finish in the TCAL and Central Coast Section record 223 stolen bases.

Leading the list of first-team honorees is junior Eric Vegas, who not only paced the team with 40 RBI and hits with 42, he also led the entire league with 17 doubles. Vegas finished the season with a .494 batting average.

Taylor Chris picked up his second straight first-team award, anchoring the Mustangs’ pitching staff with 72 strikeouts in 50 innings of work, posting a 4-2 record in the process. At the plate, the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo-bound senior collected 34 hits, 26 RBI, a team-high 40 runs scored and was 41 of 47 in stolen base attempts.

Senior Jordan Holler missed the first couple weeks of the season but still managed to produce a .473 average with the help of 26 hits from the leadoff spot. Holler also tied with Chris for the most stolen bases, converting 41 of 44 attempts.

Sophomore Bubu Garcia, whose season came to an abrupt halt in the final game of the regular season against San Benito where he suffered an ankle injury that required surgery, rounds out the list of first-team recipients.

Garcia was the fixture at shortstop for the Mustangs, and was a pivotal part of the offense in the fifth spot for manager Johnny Ramirez. Garcia finished with a .376 average, including 32 hits and 32 RBI.

A list of three underclassmen were named to the league’s second-team. Junior Reed Kienle (.378, 19 runs, 19 hits, 14 RBI,25-29 stolen bases), sophomore Brent Newton (.471, 22 runs, 24 hits, 14 RBI, 25-30 stolen bases) and sophomore Jordan Dexter (.333, 12 runs, 20 hits, 19 RBI, caught all 29 games), will all return to the team next season.

A pair of senior pitchers, Tyler Price and Angel Gamboa, were named to the honorable mention list. Price tossed the school’s second perfect game in history against Alisal and finished with a meager 2.02 earned run average in 10 games. Gamboa appeared in 12 games out of the bullpen for the Mustangs, notching 17 strike outs in 24.2 innings pitched.

Senior Max Fishler was named by the players for the sportsmanship award.
