Four Gilroy High baseball players were selected to play in the 2011 Bay Area World Series at Santa Clara University’s Schott Stadium this weekend.

Bubu Garcia, Jordan Dexter, Brendan Holler and Ronnie Reed received nominations to play in the exhibition tournament that features promising sophomores and juniors from nine Bay Area counties split into six teams – North Bay, South Bay, Coast, Peninsula, Contra Costa and Alameda – and usually attracts a number of collegiate scouts.

The four Mustangs will represent the Coast, a team coached by Art Hunsdorfer (Salinas High), Billy Aviles (San Benito) and Gilroy’s Johnny Ramirez.

“This is a pretty big deal,” Ramirez said. “It’s cool for these guys to be nominated.”

The four-day tournament also includes an all-star game – the main event of sorts – on Tuesday, where the tournament’s standout players go head to head.

The Coast kicks off its tourney against the North Bay on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and returns to the field at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday to face the Peninsula. The fifth-place, third-place and championship games are scheduled for Monday. Tuesday’s all-star finale is slated for 6 p.m.
