SALINAS – The Gilroy High baseball team scored five runs in the first inning and didn’t slow down, taking out North Salinas 16-6 in a Tri-County Athletic League affair down in Salinas on Tuesday.
Jordan Holler led off the game with a hit and the Mustangs were literally off and running as the senior promptly stole second and third. Taylor Chris delivered an RBI-single to ignite the five-run first.
“It was nice to see the top of the lineup perform like that,” manager Johnny Ramirez said. “It was good to see offense like that.”
The Mustangs had scored a combined six runs against the Vikings in the teams’ previous two meetings (1-1), but exorcised the offensive demons in the rubber game to notch the season-series win.
“If you give North Salinas a little pulse, we know what can happen,” Ramirez said.
The Mustangs (15-8-1, 11-4 TCAL) kept the pedal to the metal, going 11 for 11 in stolen bases for the game, including four by Holler, and went 4 for 4 in hit and run situations, Ramirez said.
“We only have one game this week and they needed to come out and take care of business,” he said. “I wanted to see these guys execute, and they did.”
Seven Mustangs had multiple-hit days at the plate with Holler leading the way, going a spotless 4 for 4.
“That is my leadoff guy sparking us,” Ramirez said.
Jordan Dexter pounded out three hits and three RBI, Eric Vegas padded his stats with another three base knocks, and Reed Kienle and Brent Newton added balance to the bottom half of the order with three hits of their own. Neal Dinsmore and Chris each had a pair of hits.
Michael Hartman pitched the first three innings for GHS and Tyler Price tossed the final four frames to get the win.
A busy week awaits Gilroy beginning next Tuesday as the Mustangs host Alvarez on Senior Day.
GHS will wrap up the season with two monster games Wednesday and Thursday against San Benito in Hollister. The first game is a make-up date for a game that was rained out back on April 21. Both contests are scheduled for 4 p.m. starts.
