SAN JOSE – Facing a team with an enormous height advantage at nearly every position, Gilroy boys’ volleyball saw its season come to an end Thursday night, as the Mustangs lost in three sets (25-11, 25-13, 26-24) to host Bellarmine in the Central Coast Section quarterfinals.
The defeat leaves Gilroy, which received a No. 6 seed in the tournament, with a 22-8 record on the season.
Bellarmine (20-7), seeded third, went on to beat No. 2 St. Francis (31-5) in four sets in the semifinals and will take on Los Gatos in tonight’s 7:30 p.m. championship contest at Independence High School.
While the season ended on a tough note, the Mustangs did receive plenty of recognition from the Tri-County Athletic League after taking second place with a 12-2 record.
Senior setter Greg Calimpong was named the TCAL’s Most Valuable Player after averaging nine assists per set, while senior middle blocker Thomas Costa was also included on the TCAL First Team.
Sam Howard and Steven Valdez were named to the TCAL Second Team, and Alfred Medenceles was given the sportsmanship award for Gilroy. Honorable mention was given to Etay Haramaty, Chad Rodrigues and Nico Sandoval.
The TCAL will be hosting its ninth annual Senior All-Star game Friday at 7 p.m. at San Benito High School.
