At least for one year, the annual Prune Bowl between Gilroy High and San Benito High will be no more. For the first time since 1967, the Prune Bowl will not be held in the fall of 2013.
Thursday’s volleyball match between Gilroy High and San Benito High was a must win for the Balers for two reasons: A win would give them full control of the Tri-County Athletic League’s Valley Division and they would get some revenge from an early-season loss to the Mustangs.
As with every season, winning the first game in league play is a must. For the San Benito and Gilroy high baseball teams, a league-opening win meant even more, as the Balers try to earn a seventh-straight Tri-County Athletic League title and the Mustangs try knock their rival off that perch.
After going into halftime with a slim three-point lead over Gilroy, San Benito head coach David Kaplansky knew his team needed to change their style of play.
