Gilroy police arrested a woman for drunken driving during a DUI checkpoint Friday, June 8 at Tenth Street and Alexander Street, near Orchard Supply Hardware.
While allegedly drunken drivers kept police throughout Santa Clara County busy over the Memorial Day weekend, overall arrests for driving under the influence are vastly down from the same period last year.Â
The primary cause of deaths on local streets and highways remains drunken driving, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office and the "Avoid the 13" DUI Task Force will keep up with its DUI enforcement in the county as a result of a recent $101,500 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Sheriff’s office will administer the grant for the entire county on behalf of the Santa Clara County Police Chiefs’ Association. Â
Stacy Lonnberg, the 51-year-old Gilroy woman who is charged with murder for allegedly driving drunk and causing a Jan. 14 car accident that killed her husband and daughter, is scheduled to enter a plea on Thursday at the Santa Clara County Superior Court at 2 p.m.
UPDATE: Dennis Leffew, the San Jose driver who was recently charged with vehicular manslaughter in the Nov. 6 crash that killed Gavilan College basketball player Andrel Gaines, turned himself in Monday and is being held on a $250,000 bail in the San Mateo County Jail, according to Karen Guidotti, chief deputy with the San Mateo County DA’s Office.Â
