Selecting students for the Gilroy Dispatch’s annual senior spotlight honor is no enviable task. That’s why we make the principals do it. These students have navigated the daunting labyrinth of high school hurdles, and we are inspired by the drive, promise and optimistic outlook of these young men and women, who remind us that nothing is out of reach if you’re just willing to push yourself.

The Gilroy Police Department Anti-Crime Team executed a narcotics bust that resulted in the discovery of more than 450 illegal marijuana plants with an estimated street value of approximately $1.4 million.

Besides getting a jump-start on bumper-to-bumper traffic that will likely clog U.S. 101 for a gazillion hours on Monday, Gilroyans leaving town for Memorial Day weekend have another good reason to head back Sunday night.

After nearly two months of negotiations, the City of Gilroy and the Gilroy Police Officers Association have agreed on a new two-year contract that awards 2 percent raises each year for all 59 police officers within the union.

Let’s start right off the bat: Gov. Jerry Brown and his Band of Little Renown can take his more taxes plan and stuff it. I’m sick of the state government trying to bleed us dry, stealing tax money from our city government, closing down RDA entities to feed their spending habits and threatening the purse strings of our schools. The farther away the money gets, the less control we the taxpayers have over it.  Cut the state budget. Vote against every state incumbent, vote against every tax. Unfortunately, it’s at the point where I believe that’s what it’s going to take to shake the status quo up. California government is not serving us, the people who pay the taxes. California government, despite a $16 billion deficit, increases spending. Nobody in California has the guts to really wade in, apply common sense, accept the pain that goes with reality and change things. This quote, posted by OldMan64 on our website comment board, spoke volumes and, if the voters don’t do something drastic very soon, this state is going down the tubes. OldMan’s choice hammered it home: “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.” ~ Alexis de Tocqueville, ca. 1830. Vote them all out, vote against more taxes. Do it, and we might save our state and the American Republic.

Imagine that empty storefront in downtown as an artisan bakery. Instead of the bleak cement slab, there are black-and-white tiles and tables to meet with friends or co-workers. Instead of a “for lease” sign, the greeting reads, “fresh croissants and coffee.”

Lifelong Gilroy resident Richard “Rich” Hoenck has given back to the community throughout his life, and now he wants to contribute in another way: With a blood drive Saturday, May 26.

The community is invited to join Gilroy United Methodist Church and The Music Academy for a series of programs featuring our neighbors in concert. "Musi-Kaleidoscope" a five program series showcasing professional musicians from the South Valley sharing their favorite music in family-friendly concerts on Saturday afternoons. Each program begins at 2 p.m. in the acoustically excellent sanctuary at 7600 Church St.
