POTW: Chunkie

Barn owl returning to the wild

The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center will be releasing a Barn Owl at the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 6:30 PM.  The barn owl was the sole survivor of 3 downy nestlings that had fallen from their tree nest in Morgan Hill in June.   WERC’s educational (non-releasable) barn owl, Barnadette, will be making a personal appearance at the event. Anaplasmosis in Cattle – A Problem for the Fall Season

Summer has ended and fall is here, which means it is time for cattlemen to watch their herds for signs of anaplasmosis. This disease, which appears most often in the fall months, can be devastating to some herds if not treated properly or in a timely manner.

Piggies need a new home

Hank and Alex are owner surrendered pot belly pigs that are available at the San Martin Animal Shelter. Both are 1-year and 6 months old and have been neutered. If you’re interested in adopting the pigs, call the shelter at (408) 686-3900.

Protect humans, animals from rabies

World Rabies Day is September 28, 2012. It is a day to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies. More than 55,000 people die from rabies worldwide every year, a rate of one person every 10 minutes. This is an astonishing number, especially because rabies in humans in 100 per cent preventable. Most of these cases are transmitted to humans by dogs.

Assisting Service Dogs

Although most people have pets strictly for companionship, those with disabilities often use animals to help perform every day functions.  These “service animals” are trained to provide specific assistance tailored to their owner’s disability.  Just like any animal, however, service animals can develop disabilities and need rehabilitation as well.
