All about the Garlic Festival

Kudos to parking lot volunteers: "I wanted to congratulate you on the story on the Garlic Festival. It's a good reason why local papers should stay in existence. On your heroes though, I think you left someone out that is a super volunteer that you might want to go back and consider. It's the lady, I believe her name is Suki, who runs with 350 volunteers in the parking lot. Those kids work in the dust and it's a remarkable feat that they can even live through that. I'm telling you this in spite of the fact that is cost me $120 to park there because I blew a tire on a rock. But I'd like to see those people given credit along with the fire throwers and so forth in Gourmet Alley. Thank you."

City employee cell phone policy?

Cell concerns:

Garlic Fest tough on neighbors

Stinky situation: "I'm seeing red right now, calling the Red Phone. I just read 'Potential for stinky traffic snarl' (July 28). I live off of Thomas Road and now I read the paper and they're going to leave the light green at Santa Teresa longer so traffic can keep flowing. Well I want to know what the hell those of us that live out in this pocket here off of Thomas and Santa Teresa are supposed to do for three days. They used to provide permits for us as neighbors, so we could get out and move and do our business and whatever we need to do for the three days. But now they do nothing for us. I'm really upset by this article because they don't even give a darn about us and we're within walking distance and the potential for what we could contribute ... I'm just really angry and wanted to call. I don't know if you'll put it in the paper, but I just had to let off steam because I'm seeing red right now."

Red Phone 7/26

Striping concerns: "I have a big concern about pedestrian walkways across intersections. They're not being kept up. Take a look at the intersection of Leavesley and Murray. It's one of the busiest intersections in Gilroy. A while back the Dispatch put together an article on pedestrian accidents in the city and ... I think the city needs to stay on top of painting those sites for the pedestrians. Moreso, those stripes are for folks to see while they're driving vehicles. Thank you for your help. Hopefully people will learn to be aware of pedestrian crossings throughout Gilroy and make this a safer place. Thank you."

The mailboxes were moved

Mailbox not missing: "Hi there, I was just reading the paper this afternoon and I noticed that somebody had made a complaint about the Wren Avenue mailboxes. Your response was that the Post Office supervisors didn't return calls and that perhaps they were being repaired. Just for information, I work in that complex and the mailboxes are still here, but they have been moved over to the inner side parking lot inside the building. It's no longer streetside. So if they drive around the parking lot on the left hand side, they will find all the mailboxes and the UPS box. Thank you."

Alley dumping disgusts caller

Hazardous waste: "Hi Red Phone. Here's my complaint: Sometime around July 3, somebody dumped a 5-gallon bucket of human waste in the alley on La Coche Way, behind our house. The smell is horrendous. We've made numerous phone calls everyday to the city.
