Callers compliment on awards

Kudos to the Dispatch: "I wanted to congratulate the Dispatch on getting the top award for a newspaper in its category. It has been wonderful and so improved since the new owner. You really deserve it. Thanks to the Gilroy Dispatch."

Callers not fond of the bikinis

Bikini brouhaha: "Hi, I was calling about your article in the Tuesday, July 5 paper. I was just looking through the paper and I love the pictures on the first page, the little parade for the Fourth of July. But then when I get to page A7, I see girls in thong bikinis. I think you could have chosen better pictures to represent the Hollister Independence Rally than these women on these Harleys wearing thongs. Those aren't pictures I want my teenage daughter to view and look up to. I think it was very poor choosing of the pictures. Thank you."

Loads of landscaping on the way

Look out for landscaping: Steve Beams, with Gilroy's Engineering Division, contacted the Red Phone Thursday to let it know that the Santa Teresa Boulevard landscape median grading, including curbs, is under way. The Red Phone wanted to pass the information along, as it has received a few calls about the landscaping on that project.

Red Phone goes to the dogs

Little ones need leashes: "Hey Red Phone. I'm calling in response to your question about dogs off leashes. I think even small dog owners need to be responsible and keep their dogs on leashes. I'm on the other side of the coin. I have a large dog who, if dogs are off leashes and come up to her, she gets a little aggressive. And that's a liability for me. There's a ton of people around town who keep their small dogs off leashes because they don't think they can do any damage. ... I can control my dog if she's on a leash, but I can't control the little dogs coming up to her."

What happened to D.A.R.E.?

What happened to D.A.R.E.?: "Hi, I'm wondering if you can investigate why the Gilroy Unified School District, after 20 plus years, has decided to cancel the D.A.R.E. program that was completely funded by the Gilroy Police Department. No money was ever asked for funding by the GUSD and the police department always donated their time, the prize, everything completely paid for by the police department. Why are they doing away with this education with no thank you, no notice to the police department saying we've decided to cut this out, nothing. I think D.A.R.E. is a great program and my daughter, who just graduated from the program, enjoyed it and got some great information. Can you look into that for me? Thank you."

Beautifying the sound walls

Any beautification planned?: "Hi Red Phone. Now that we put up those horrendous sound walls on Santa Teresa, we have 7-foot ugly weeds growing against them and it's terribly ugly. I'd like to know if the city's going to at least make an attempt to beautify those sound walls. Thank you."

A hill called Christmas

What's in a name: "Hello Red Phone! While at a wedding the other day, my husband and I and another couple were sitting at the table and my husband, being born and raised in Gilroy, they all wanted to know how Christmas Hill Park got its name. My husband looked at them and said, 'I've been here my whole life and I don't even know how it got its name.' So if you could find that out for us and publish it, we'd really appreciate it. We're wondering too. Thank you."
