Three-time world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will fight Michael Katsidis on April 9 in Las Vegas, Guerrero’s publicist Mario Serrano said Thursday.
Reports of the bout circulated throughout a number of media outlets Thursday morning.
The HBO pay-per-view bout will be co-featured with a welterweight fight between Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
“Anytime you can fight on HBO pay-per-view, it’s a great situation,” Serrano said.
Guerrero (28-1-1, 18 KOs) and Katsidis were scheduled to clash in March 2010, but the bout was called off as Guerrero took time to be with his wife Casey, who was recovering from a bone marrow transplant.
“We’ve come full circle from last year’s postponement,” Serrano said. “So now let’s get it on.”
Katsidis (27-3, 22 KOs) recently lost his bid for the WBO Lightweight crown last November, suffering a ninth-round TKO to titleholder Juan Manuel Marquez.
Guerrero, who earned the mandatory tag for the next lightweight world title shot, has been lobbying with fervor for a crack at Marquez.
But according to Serrano those advances have been ignored.
“We have hall of famers avoiding Robert Guerrero and that speaks volumes of Guerrero’s talents in my opinion,” Serrano said.
Because Marquez has overlooked Guerrero’s willingness to fight, and due to the fact that The Ghost is the mandatory contender, the April 9 bout might be for the WBO Lightweight title if Marquez chooses to vacate the belt or is stripped.
