The first quarter was that dominant for the Mustangs, who led 16-2 after the first eight minutes and coasted to a 60-48 victory.
The lead was as large as 53-29 at one point and never once dipped below double-digits after the first few minutes.
“I guess it was never much in doubt,” GHS head coach Bud Ogden said. “We played scrappy, and that’s what we were emphasizing before the game. The intensity level was way up.”
Senior forward Adam Moon, who paced a balanced Gilroy attack with 10 points, said the ‘Stangs (11-7) were looking to close out the non-league season strong before next Thursday’s TCAL opener against Hollister.
“We were ready to play at the beginning of the game,” Moon said. “We wanted to go into league with momentum and I think we’ve done that.
“Hollister is next and we’re looking forward to that.”
Against MVC (7-8), Ogden said he was especially pleased with his team’s distribution of the ball.
“It was as good as it’s been all year,” he said. “They were looking for each other, and that’s a great sign. Nobody was selfish.”
The Mustangs’ recent emphasis on blocking out also paid off. Led by Ryan Chisolm’s six rebounds, a whopping 12 GHS players pulled down at least one board as the ‘Stangs manhandled Monte Vista by a 30-9 margin.
Although during the game he seemed irritated by many of Gilroy’s 14 turnovers, Ogden didn’t show much unhappiness afterward.
“We hustled better, had more intensity, played somewhat smarter and liked sharing the ball,” he said. “If we play like this during league, we’ll be fine.”
JV wins again
The junior varsity Mustangs continued to roll right along with a 71-37 victory over Monte Vista Wednesday night. Gilroy (14-3) led by just 10 at halftime, but exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter.
Frank Tomasetti scored eight in the last stanza and led GHS with 12 for the game. Jacob Dexter dished out seven assists and Jason Conrad hauled down eight rebounds.
The Mustangs were coming off last week’s championship performance at the Watsonville Holiday Tournament, where they beat MVC to win their third straight tourney title, after previously grabbing first-place trophies in Hollister and at the Bob Hagen.
In the four-day tournament in Watsonville, GHS began with a resounding 73-20 laugher over Scotts Valley. Then, behind Destry Jones (18 pts., 8 reb.) and Matt Hemeon (14 pts.), Gilroy held off the homestanding Wildcatz, 62-54.
In a 61-52 semifinal victory over Aptos, Jason Conrad had a monster game (19 pts., 15 reb.), while Derek Jensen added 13 rebounds and seven assists. The win propelled the ‘Stangs into the championship game, where they prevailed over Monte Vista, 44-34.
Jones contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, while Michael Martinez added a dozen points and a dozen boards.
