Mustangs struggles continue, wrap up Bulldog Chase Tournament
tonight against Santa Teresa.
Following its second straight sub-par performance at the Bulldog Chase Tournament on Wednesday, the Gilroy High boys basketball team will meet to make a few adjustments and iron out a few of the wrinkles that have led to the two set backs.

Head coach Matt Tait scheduled a Thursday morning practice prior to the Mustangs’ final outing of the tournament tonight against Santa Teresa at 6 p.m. at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill.

“We have to take a step back and retool a bit,” Tait said after the Mustangs 69-54 loss to Mesa Verde on Wednesday.

The Mustangs did cut the lead to two points in the third quarter but couldn’t get over the hump in the final period.

For the second consecutive game, shots were not falling for GHS and the aggressive defense that catapulted the Mustangs to a 6-2 record entering the tournament has hit a snag in recent games.

Though the Mustangs converted just 11-of-27 from the free throw line, Tait pointed to another defensively deficient performance as the main pitfall.

“The defensive end is where we are killing ourselves,” Taut said.

With Tri-County Athletic League play around the corner with a matchup against Alvarez next Wednesday, Tait wants to see his squad’s effort in tonight’s encounter with the Saints increase tenfold.

“Win or lose, if they compete for 32 minutes I will be OK with that,” Tait said. “At least that is a step in the right direction.”
