Head coach Armando Padilla wasn’t exactly thrilled with his team’s performance in a 3-1 loss to Bellarmine early last week.

He thought the Gilroy High boys varsity soccer team only played its best during the final 15 minutes of the contest.

Knowing a weekend stay in Santa Barbara with three tough games scheduled at the Soccer Town High School Showcase loomed on the horizon, Padilla became anxious to see how his players would respond.

All in all, it turned into a successful trip.

The Mustangs posted a 1-0-2 record, grabbing a 4-2 victory over Coachella Valley on Friday before finishing Saturday all square with draws versus Corona del Mar and Santa Maria.

GHS (2-1-2) turned a 2-2 halftime tie with Coachella Valley (3-1) into the two-goal triumph. Jorge Sanchez scored and assisted on another goal, Abraham Arreaga tallied and Jonathan Diaz de Leon rattled home a pair of goals.

The Mustangs began play bright and early Saturday and weathered a 2-1 intermission deficit, tying the contest at 2-2 where it stood to the final whistle.

Sanchez and Diaz de Leon accounted for the Mustangs’ goals while Kristian Urias and Ale Hernandez were credited with the assists.

GHS is back on the pitch today, making the short trek north to Morgan Hill to face Live Oak at 3:15 p.m.
